The FaceBook Egotists

September 26, 2008

A team of researchers from the University of Georgia has come to a conclusion that will undoubtedly turn the tech world on its side (ha): if you use Facebook to promote your lovely self, it shows through. Narcissists, or those psychologically defined as “excessively egotistical,” will inflate their profiles on the social network with more photos and massive friends lists.

Did we not already know that that was the case?  Unless half the contacts/friends on my facebook account really are meeting 10 – 20 new people who are truly worth counting as friends each week…; then it’s always been an ego massaging exercise.

China says: “I can haz more internetz pleez?”

September 24, 2008

“China is running out of IP addresses, Unless it makes the switch to IPv6. : The Internet in China may soon run out. According to the China Internet Network Information Center, under the current allocation speed, China’s IPv4 address resources can only meet the demand of 830 more days and if no proper measures are taken by then, new Chinese netizens will not be able to gain normal access to the Internet.

Slashdot is reporting this today.  Apparently China needs an urgent supply of new IP addresses via the new and improved IPv6 protocol.  Between poisoning babies with tainted baby milk, bashing Tibet and a myriad of other self created problems and human rights abuses it appears that China will soon have an even harder time accessing the already heavily censured web.  Sucks to be Chinese.

.me

July 18, 2008

With the launch of the new .me domain names there have been plenty of decent new names available.

Godaddy has had a few problems with people trying to buy up the really popular addresses.  Think Awso.me.

Well, I couldn’t be left out of the loop.  But with the .me’s going for between £20-£25 for two years as a minimum, I could only really afford one.  And that was at a push.

I’m sure you can guess which one it was.  No?  Surely you can…

Munch.Me is now my property.  Well at least for two years.  At the moment both addresses, ie munchme.net and munch.me work, with munch.me being a web forward.  I will keep them both up until I have the chance to move everything over to Munch.Me permanently, which shouldn’t be too long.  I’ll of course post as and when.

Any other webmasters out there reading this, there are plenty of great .me domains left up for grabs.  I would have had them by now if only I had the funds.  Be quick!

New Site Launch

July 11, 2008

I have been working very hard over the past couple of days preparing my new website for launch.

Munch Tech is a site that will provide bitesize technology news as and when it happens.  It has been in the works for a fairly long period of time and will continue to be a work in progress for the foreseeable future, building on the foundations that have already been built.  You can probably expect a tie in with my recently launched Podcast ‘Pod Munch’.

The site in live now and is updated minute by minute where appropriate.

Hit Obsessed

June 19, 2008

Running your own websites leads to all kinds of strange obsessions, the main of which I found is the unconquerable urge to check hit counts every day.

On this blog and on another couple of my more successful ones I check the hit counts more than once a day.  For some reason I like to know know many ‘unique visitors’ these sites get and, more importantly, where the referrals are coming from.  And I get this unstoppable urge every time I am online!  And all the time I am online!

Maybe it’s just me, and I’m the only hits obsessed ‘webmaster’ out there.  But I really doubt it.  A lot of websites depend on hits for income in one way or another.  But none of my sites are revenue based.

It’s probably just one of those weird addictions on the internet that popular culture is always harping on about.

Just wanted to share.

Website design

May 26, 2008

Anyone who knows me reasonably well knows that I love to build / host / create websites[1. I have in fact created them for most people who know this.].

In fact over the period of time I have been doing it I have built between 50 – 100 [2. The exact number is a state secret.].

I have always wanted to do something to make use of this weird desire I have to fiddle with technology and software so I have put together me Website Design and Hosting page.  Basically to show off what I have built fairly recently and maybe to drum up some cash.  Obviously I wouldn’t be charging much [3. The GNP of a small country per page will do.] but it might be something I can do for fun and payment…

We will see what happens.
