I had heard good things about this Crowe outing, but never really became a fan of Bale after Batman, but have seen him in a few decent films. So it came as a pleasant surprise to find this, excuse the cliche, rip roaring adventure. I haven’t seen a Western quite this good since The Unforgiven, though it doesn’t surpass it.

The film gripped me from just after it’s rather slow start right up until the end. I won’t say this film isn’t typically Hollywood, because it is, but it raises the bar where 95% of others hit well below. Crowe, who i know a lot of people think is over rated, throws in a very fine performance, which is equally matched by co-star Bale.

As always, this film isn’t without it’s faults. The end, as is the norm, turns out to be typical, if not totally predictable. But if you are a fan of Westerns, Crowe, Bale or just really great films, then this one should be high on your hit list.
