A classic, sweeping western. Gregory Peck is on top form as the moral hero, with Heston as the brainless muscle. Jean Simmons is gorgeous as Peck’s destined to be. Films like this just aren’t made anymore. It seems that the film watching public simply doesn’t have the attention span for the sweeping cinematography and drawn out story. The Hannassey’s make wonderful complex villans to the piece, with the Maragons as the misguided ‘good guys’. Textured and layered cinema as it used to be, and in many ways, how it should be.
