Rebecca (1940)

Alfred Hitchcock

Laurence Olivier – ‘Maxim’ de Winter
Joan Fontaine – The Second Mrs. de Winter

These golden black and white films always seem to amaze me.  A brilliant film through and through twisting you from one expectation to another and refusing to let go of you until ‘The End’.  The ambiance flips from suspense and almost supernatural to crime thriller and beyond.  Fontaine is spellbinding as the young Mrs. de Winter and a beautifully talented leading lady.  Olivier pulls us this way and that with his nuances.  I won’t include any spoilers for those of you who have yet to see this Hitchcock classic and I’ll leave you saying: ‘Watch it! Watch it!’.
